Trying to eat healthier

May 14th, 2012 at 02:20 am

and as anyone who has tried or is trying knows, it's not easy and it's not cheap!

Or maybe it is. You tell me.

I think for guys, it's also slightly different as well, such as more protein intake to promote muscle growth versus trying to slim down.

So, here's my basic diet plan thus far:

I eat regular food, but a big meal first thing during the day. I try to make it breakfast, but life being how it is, sometimes it is pushed back to lunch.

For my late lunch (or more like supper since sometimes it gets that late), I am recently trying out just a meal replacement bar, which I think is enough, but really, only time will tell.

And then for dinner (which is sometimes late night after my workout), I just down a whey protein shake.

How's it working out? Not sure yet. I've only started this diet about a month ago, but I am optimistic that it is doable. From a numbers perspective, it should work out in terms of daily nutritional intake, but the hard part will probably be not giving into the temptation of eating more food than I am suppose to.

Oh yeah, and I also take sport multivitamins. Wow, if there's anything out there that can get truly expensive, it is this right here. To save money, I have to special order mine, in bulk, from online sources because it's hard to track down EXACTLY what I am looking for.

Here it is by the way.

However, all this is a work in progress, and any nutrition and health advice is greatly appreciate it, and of course, that it can be done affordably. What do you think?

Personally, I can never consistently take vitamins and supplements - I can drink a protein shake if isn't too chalky ... but again, not very consistently. I keep the old bottles visible as a helpful reminder to whomever in the gym is trying to sell me stuff. "Um, no."

Frankly I've had the best luck with elements of the paleo diet. I joke that its my "meat and leaves" diet, because basically its lean protein, healthy oil or fat, any leafy veg, any tree nut. I tried the meal replacement bars - didn't really work well for me. What I find easy to carry with me should I turn peckish in the afternoon is a snack bag of raw almonds. I do count out the almonds I eat.

I'm a 50 yr old woman, so YMMV.

Thanks for the input! I'm basically researching the Paleo diet as well, since a lot of workout gurus I know online swear by it.

At the very least right now, I no longer try to eat any carbs or saturated fats, since regular food in general (along with power bars) are often times enough to get the necessary intake.

As for bars, I think you hit the nail on the head in term of long terms usage; that one can easily get sick of it. I may have to switch to or alternate with replacement drinks as well. Still looking into it.

By the way, have you tried a Luna Lemon Zest bar yet? If not, give it a try and let me know what you think of it.

Oh yes ... in terms of saving money, it can be done, it just can't be done in terms of comparing the money you save by eating crap. You can construct a price book - pick the 20 or so things that it is important for you to eat, then start shopping around. For example, it turns out that getting a daily lunch avocado is important to me - so figuring out that grocery store a has it for .99/avocado, another 10 for $10, one produce stand has it for .89, another has one for .79... well you buy the .79 one especially if its on the way. Saving in context.

I love the Luna Bars. Lemon is delicious but they all are a little too sweet now and the carbs are a little too much for weight loss. I can generally find any of the flavors for .99 apiece at Trader Joe's.
