Chrometophobia

So I learned there is a term for describing the fear of spending money, and it's generally called

Chrometophobia. I really think it should be called Chrimataphobia though (the actual greek term for money), so that it does not get confused with Chrometophobia's original definition of the fear of colors... which apparently is also a legitimate phobia.

I think I have a mild case of this. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing though. In fact, I think everybody should at least have a mild case of it. So what do you think? How bad is YOUR Chrometophobia?

Well, with the way we are spending money lately...I don't think I have it too bad, but yes as a saver I have to have a mild case at least. Smile

This is not a fear I have. Big Grin I would be reluctant to spend money I didn't have to spend (which has served me well and kept me out of credit card debt). But when I have money, I have no problem spending it. I don't spend it how everyone else thinks I should, but have no problem spending money on that which makes me happy.

I think a lot of it comes from money attitudes we see in our formative years and so on. I admit I am blessed to have very balanced parents. Frugality always meant abundance, to me, because that is what I saw. Overall, it's just hard to imagine a better money example. I was also never exposed to the idea that money is evil or the root of evil. (I saw that mentioned in the link).

Overall, I notice I don't have the same fears or beliefs about money that most do in our culture.

My family might say I'm overly cautious about spending -- but I feel no pangs about it as long as it's in the budget. Spending without knowing where the money's coming from puts me REALLY on edge, though.

I'm thinking about having a less structured budget once we have more wiggle room. But I think I'm still a spender at heart, so I wonder if it'll end up going badly and I decide to just go back to a tightly controlled budget long-term. We'll see...

I'm not afraid of spending money. I am afraid of not having money, though. Financial security is very important to me. That is why I want a hefty Emergency Fund.

Peniaphobia is apparently the fear of poverty.

I don't think I have a fear of spending money .. I have a dislike of spending more than I want to spend ... or spending more than necessary due to circumstances out of my control ... but I don't fear spending money.

Ditto what LuckyRobin said. However, I finally in the last few years feel secure, feel like my spouse and I will be okay for as long as we live. This is something I really needed, as, yes, I did have anxiety about it previously.

I agree that the chromet- word sounds more like fear of color/
