Printer not printing

September 5th, 2025 at 08:27 pm

I first bought my printer in 2007(!), and up until now, it still printed.

Technically, there is nothing wrong with it.  At first, I thought it was a driver issue, so I went online to download it, but the company says it's been discontinued, and driver support is no longer offered.

I also thought maybe it was a hardware issue.  I opened it up, and all the ink lights are red.  However, I still have ink.

Much to my dismay, I am faced with the possibility of having to ditch this perfectly good device, just to be forced to buy another one.  I would really, really rather not, but if I were to, anybody got any suggestions?

I wish I had a suggestion for you to fix it. Maybe a tech-savvy person in this community will.

It also bothers me that even relatively expensive items today have a throw-away expectation. It seems so wasteful. There have been several times that I've found it was more expensive to buy a new part than to toss it and replace the whole thing, for example a coffee maker carafe. That time I was able to find a replacement carafe at our local Goodwill store.

Our printer keeps wanting to 'update' with a security update. I looked it up (I have it set not to do them automatically) and there is outrage online because the security update prevents the use of compatible non-HP ink cartridges. They are updating the software to force users to only buy ink from them! Needless to say, I didn't install it despite the fact that my replacement cartridges at the moment are HP ones. I want the option to use cheaper compatible ones.

After I posted my comment, a thought occurred: is your printer an HP and did you recently install an update (or did one automatically install)? And are your ink cartridges non-HP ones? If so, may be the answer is to find out how to uninstall the update.

I have a Canon, but I am using 3rd party ink cartridges, so maybe that is indeed it.

I fully agree about waste, because I can't help but feel like my old printer can work perfectly fine still, but I don't know how.

I recently purchased a budget Brother laser printer. It is said to have among the lowest print cost per page. As you may already know, printers also take on the razor/blades model where they sell the machine cheap, but make up for it with over-charged ink cartridges. Hopefully, this new printer alleviates the cost per page issue.

It's crazy that nothing works for long and is almost impossible to repair. The last time I had a printer go kaput, I took it to Best Buy to recycle. Not sure if they still do that, but better than a landfill if you can't find someone to fix it.
