I first bought my printer in 2007(!), and up until now, it still printed.
Technically, there is nothing wrong with it. At first, I thought it was a driver issue, so I went online to download it, but the company says it's been discontinued, and driver support is no longer offered.
I also thought maybe it was a hardware issue. I opened it up, and all the ink lights are red. However, I still have ink.
Much to my dismay, I am faced with the possibility of having to ditch this perfectly good device, just to be forced to buy another one. I would really, really rather not, but if I were to, anybody got any suggestions?

It also bothers me that even relatively expensive items today have a throw-away expectation. It seems so wasteful. There have been several times that I've found it was more expensive to buy a new part than to toss it and replace the whole thing, for example a coffee maker carafe. That time I was able to find a replacement carafe at our local Goodwill store.
Our printer keeps wanting to 'update' with a security update. I looked it up (I have it set not to do them automatically) and there is outrage online because the security update prevents the use of compatible non-HP ink cartridges. They are updating the software to force users to only buy ink from them! Needless to say, I didn't install it despite the fact that my replacement cartridges at the moment are HP ones. I want the option to use cheaper compatible ones.

I fully agree about waste, because I can't help but feel like my old printer can work perfectly fine still, but I don't know how.
I recently purchased a budget Brother laser printer. It is said to have among the lowest print cost per page. As you may already know, printers also take on the razor/blades model where they sell the machine cheap, but make up for it with over-charged ink cartridges. Hopefully, this new printer alleviates the cost per page issue.
