Air quality monitor

February 8th, 2026 at 10:09 am

After reading PatientSaver's entry on them, I decided to get one as well, mostly because I am a bit concerned about my small room perhaps resulting in unhealthy levels of CO2 concentration, which as you know leads to dizziness, headaches, and the inability to focus.

Well, according to my new monitor, the CO2 levels seem very acceptable.  However, this is also most likely because I keep my room door open at all times.  It will not be the case come summer though, when I plan to run a window AC as well, to prevent from having to cool the entire house.

Hmm, I should run an experiment by keeping my door closed, and see what the readings say.

Currently though, the monitor is also showing that my humidity level is rather low, at only 20%.  That makes sense, as my skin always gets rather itchy around this cold time of year.  What to do about it though?  I am not sure if this is mildly bad or very bad?  And what would be the ideal solution in this case?

All other readings, including the ones that I don't understand yet, are all in the green.

20% is low; 30% to 50% is typical for a house in winter. The skin itching would be a result of this. The solution is a humidifier of some sort. You can get an electric powered one or if you are around the house, boil a huge pot of water (with perhaps some lemon rind in it) at a low boil or if you have radiators put a tray to hold water on top of them.

Hmm OK thanks Dido. I’ll look into maybe some kind of a small humidifier.

It's smart to have one, Tabs. Glad you got one and you are learning about it.

Oh, congrats on the air purifier, fellow geek!

That 20% humidity is low like mine. I don't think it's "bad" for you per se but you may be less comfortable, not just in terms of itchy skin. For me I think it aggravates a tendency for me to have overly dry eyes, though I also found drinking more water helps. Another issue caused by the dry air is waking up with a sore throat. That used to happen to me.

As Dido said, if you want to moderate the humidity you can buy a small humidifier. I have a whole house one but I don't think it's working and I'm reluctant to pay an HVAC guy to make a special trip just to check that. Also, the colder it is outside, the drier it will become inside, so it may just be a reflection of the extremely cold weather we've been having.

One reading that seems very sensitive is the VOC reading, and I read you may need to calibrate it to get accurate readings, which my Qingping brand says don't do in very cold weather cus you could damage it, so I plan to wait til spring.

Thanks gang. I loathe having to spend for yet another machine just to fix the humidity issue, but my constant itching is telling me it's going to be worth the money.

My monitor also has a TVOC meter. I don't know what it means yet either, but for now, the reading is the green for it. I will keep playing with this thing though, and learn as I go.
